The tubes may be annealed, only if necessary at 1600 degree Fahrenheit and then cooled by the slow furnace. The tubes harden from cold working, but they also respond to any type of carburizing method and following heat treatments. Case hardening makes tubes with hard cases and a relatively soft core. Tubes should be carburized at 1650 to 1700 degrees, water or oil quenched and tempered at 300 degrees. The depth of carburizing should be .060 to .070 inches.
